NO BLOGGERS AT ARCHBISHOP MPUNDU FUNERAL.
BLOGGERS, independent social media content creators, and freelance journalists will not be permitted access or accreditation for the funeral coverage of late Archbishop Emeritus of Lusaka, Telesphore George Mpundu, who died last Saturday.
He had been undergoing treatment over the past few months at Maina Soko Hospital.
The funeral Mass and burial will take place tomorrow, May 21, 2026, which would have been his birthday.
The funeral Mass, which will have Metropolitan Archbishop of Lusaka, His Grace Dr. Alick Banda, as the main celebrant at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus, will be followed by burial within the church premises
The Archdiocese of Lusaka Communications Department said that coverage of the late Archbishop’s funeral tomorrow will be highly restricted.
To ensure orderly coordination, security, and the smooth facilitation of media operations during the funeral, media institutions wishing to cover the event will be required to obtain accreditation.
“Access to the burial site shall be strictly restricted to authorised persons only,” reads the statement.
Accredited media personnel covering the funeral have also been advised to observe decorum, respect the sacred nature of the occasion, and adhere to all directives issued by security officials.
Born on May 21, 1947, at Kapatu Mission, Archbishop Mpundu was ordained to the priesthood in 1972.
He was installed as Bishop in 1987 and served as Bishop of Mbala, now Mpika, for 19 years before being appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Lusaka in 2004.
He later succeeded as Archbishop of Lusaka in 2006, a position he held until his retirement in 2018.
Meanwhile, the Book of Condolences for the late Archbishop Mpundu, qwho also served for a number of years as ZCCB President, remains open at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus.
