Lusaka soldier shot by male colleague dies 2 weeks after incident
A ZAMBIA Army officer who hanged on to her life for nearly two weeks after she was shot in Kabwata has died, prompting police to upgrade the case from attempted murder to murder.
The now deceased, warrant officer class two Matimba Habeenzu, 40, who was shot by fellow Zambia Army officer Warrant Officer Mwanauta Chansa on June 13, had been receiving treatment at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
According to Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, Habeenzu was discharged from UTH yesterday after showing signs of recovery.
However, later that night after returning home, she suddenly lost consciousness.
She was rushed to Maina Soko Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival at around 24:05 hours today.
Chilabi said the body has since been deposited in the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Following her death, police have officially changed the offence from attempted murder to murder.
The shooter, warrant officer Mwanauta Chansa, earlier died after drinking pesticide shortly on two occasions until he succeeded in escaping the mortal realm following the shooting incident.
“Following this development, the case has been reclassified from attempted murder to murder,” said Chilabi.
He added that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
