Police warn of alleged planned protests ahead of Hichilema’s inauguration
THE Zambia Police Service has issued a stern warning to organizers and participants of planned protests ahead of the inauguration ceremony for President-elect, Hakainde Hichilema.
Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba said police will act firmly against any unlawful assemblies ahead of the inauguration ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
Musamba said police said have credible intelligence that certain groups intend to incite public processions and demonstrations across the country, including during the swearing-in event.
” The Zambia Police Service has noted with concern that there are some individuals and groups intending to incite members of the public to engage in unlawful public processions, assemblies and protests.
“While acknowledging that Article 21 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of assembly and association, the right must be exercised in accordance with the law,” he said.
Musamba said any person or group of persons who participates, organizes, facilitates or supports unlawful activities will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
He cautioned members of the public not to allow themselves to be incited into engaging in violence, obstruction of lawful activities or any other conduct that constitutes a criminal offence.
The Inspector General also said that persons who are currently in police custody are being accorded their constitutional and legal rights.
” The Zambia Police Service remains committed to maintaining law and order and protecting life and property. Members of the public are urged to remain calm, law-abiding and cooperative with law enforcement agencies during this period,” he added.
