“I AM 100% SOUTH AFRICAN” – DEPUTY HIGHER EDUCATION MINISTER YUSUF CASSIM SPEAKS OUT AFTER FACING XENOPHOBIC AND ISLAMOPHOBIC ABUSE OVER HIS APPOINTMENT

Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Yusuf Cassim has responded to criticism surrounding his recent appointment, saying the reaction shows that South Africa still has a long way to go in building a truly united nation.

Cassim said he has been subjected to xenophobic and Islamophobic comments on social media, with some people questioning his identity and whether he belongs in government.

Responding to the criticism, Cassim insisted that he is “100% South African”, saying he was born and raised in the country and should not have his patriotism questioned because of his name, religion or appearance.

He also expressed concern that some of the comments reflected racial and religious prejudice, calling for greater unity and respect among South Africans regardless of their background.

The debate has sparked strong reactions across the country. While many have defended Cassim and condemned abusive comments, others say public officials should expect scrutiny over their appointments.

Do you agree with Yusuf Cassim that South Africa still has a long way to go in building a truly united nation, or do you see the situation differently?
