The inventor of Vaseline believed in it so much that he reportedly ate a spoonful every day

The inventor of Vaseline believed in it so much that he reportedly ate a spoonful every day.

His name was Robert Augustus Chesebrough.

In the 1800s, Chesebrough discovered petroleum jelly after noticing oil workers using a residue from drilling equipment on cuts and burns.

He refined it, marketed it, and eventually turned it into the product known as Vaseline.

But he was not just the inventor.

He was its biggest believer.

Chesebrough reportedly claimed he swallowed a spoonful of Vaseline every day because he believed so strongly in its medicinal value.

There is also a famous story that when he suffered from pleurisy in his 50s, he asked to be covered head to toe in Vaseline and later recovered.

That part is more anecdotal, but it became part of the legend around him.

What is confirmed is that he lived to be 96 and credited Vaseline with helping him live such a long life.

He did not just sell the product.

He trusted it with his own body.
