TEENAGE PREGNANCIES ON THE RISE IN WESTERN PROVINCE
Western Province has recorded an increase in teenage pregnancies in the first and second quarters of 2024.
Provincial Permanent Secretary, SIMOMO AKAPELWA disclosed to ZNBC news in Mongu that teenage pregnancy stands at 43 percent, again surpassing the national figure of 29 percent based on the 2018 Zambia Demographic Health Survey.
Mr. AKAPELWA said these statistics underscore the urgent need for enhanced family planning services in the province.
Speaking at the official launch of Marie Stopes sexual and reproductive health services in Mongu, Mr. AKAPELWA said government is committed to creating an enabling environment for the provision of rights based family planning services in the country.
And Western Province Health Director, LOVEDAY MWILA who was represented by Dr. ARTHUR MUTUNA is happy that Marie Stopes has extended its health services to help government reduce and eradicate early pregnancies among teenagers in the province.
Meanwhile, MARIE STOPES operations director, INONGE CHINYAMA said the organisation will provide family planning services to most rural communities.
