MINES MINISTER DISMISSES CLAIMS OF TAX HOLIDAYS FOR MINING FIRMS
By Chimweka Chileshe
Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe, has dismissed claims that mining companies in Zambia have been granted tax holidays.
Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of the Phoenix Breakfast show, Mr. Kabuswe said the mining sector remains the country’s biggest contributor to tax revenue, with First Quantum Minerals –FQM- ranking as Zambia’s single largest taxpayer.
He said this would not be the case if Government had offered tax holidays to mining firms, urging the public to disregard what he termed as unfounded claims creating unnecessary negative perceptions.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kabuswe has expressed confidence that Zambia will achieve one million metric tonnes of copper production in 2026 as projected by President Hakainde Hichilema at the Investing in African Mining Indaba 2026, despite missing the target last year.
Mr. Kabuswe has attributed this to increased output expected from the recovery of Sino Metals, FQM’s Trident Limited and the inclusion of the Kitumba mine.
