RIGHTS GROUPS DEMAND EXPLANATION OVER RIGHTSCON CANCELLATION
A coalition of civil society organisations has called on Government to explain the cancellation of RightsCon, an international conference focused on digital governance and human rights.
Speaking on behalf of the organisations, Arthur Muyunda, Executive Director of Southern Africa Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes, says the cancellation could negatively affect Zambia’s participation in global discussions on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, online freedoms and digital policy.
The organisations say Zambia has lost an important opportunity to build partnerships, attract investment and strengthen engagement on issues affecting the country’s digital future.
They also warn that the decision may affect confidence among international partners and deny local journalists, innovators, young professionals and civil society actors opportunities for networking and knowledge exchange.
The groups further note that the cancellation has resulted in financial losses linked to travel bookings, accommodation reservations and event preparations, while local businesses expected to benefit from the conference will also miss out economically.
The organisations have since urged Government to provide a transparent and evidence-based explanation for the decision, saying accountability is important in maintaining public trust and Zambia’s credibility internationally.
