A major storm has erupted within the Tonse Alliance after Alliance President Brian Mundubile suspended Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba from his duties and ordered him to immediately stop presenting himself as Tonse Secretary General or as an adviser to the Alliance leadership.
In a letter dated 7 September 2026, addressed to Zimba at the Tonse Secretariat in Lusaka, Mundubile said the decision followed what he described as a series of unauthorised press statements, social media posts and releases allegedly issued by Zimba.
According to Mundubile, the communications had brought the organisation into “bad repute.”
The suspension, which is pending investigations and possible disciplinary proceedings, invokes Article 13(6) of the Tonse Constitution.
The letter states that the decision was necessary to allow investigations into Zimba’s conduct and determine whether disciplinary proceedings should follow.
“It has come to my notice that there have been a series of unauthorised press and social media postings and releases by yourself that have brought the standing of our organisation into bad repute,” Mundubile stated.
Mundubile further directed Zimba not to visit the Tonse Secretariat during his suspension.
He was also warned against issuing statements in the name of Tonse or using the titles of Tonse Secretary General and Advisor to the President or organisation.
“During the course of your suspension you should not go to the secretariat or issue any statement in the name of Tonse. You should also not use the title of Tonse Secretary General or advisor to the President or organisation.”
The move effectively strips Zimba, at least temporarily, of his public-facing responsibilities within the Alliance while investigations are underway.
Mundubile says the suspension is not the final disciplinary determination.
The letter indicates that formal allegations will be presented to Zimba for his comments and explanation, giving him an opportunity to respond to the accusations.
“Formal allegations shall be provided to you for your comment and explanation,” the letter reads.
In another significant instruction, Zimba has been ordered to hand over all Tonse properties and documents in his possession to First Vice President Chifumu Kingdom Banda, SC.
Mundubile also copied the letter to Tonse’s First Vice President, Second Vice President, Chairman and National Legal Affairs Chairperson.
The suspension has now placed the Alliance under renewed scrutiny, with questions likely to emerge over the nature of the alleged statements and what triggered the leadership’s decision to take disciplinary action against one of its senior figures.
For Zimba, a prominent voice within the Tonse camp, the letter represents a dramatic and deeply consequential moment.
For Tonse Alliance, it could be the beginning of an internal reckoning over discipline, communication and who speaks for the organisation.
