LOBOLA SHOCKER! MATERO MAN DEMANDS K65,000 REFUND AFTER DISCOVERING “CRUDE OIL HAD ALREADY BEEN DRILLED
By Fredrick Banda
A dramatic scene unfolded at Matero Local Court when a 26-year-old lawyer, Fredrick Banda, marched into court demanding a full refund of the K65,000 lobola he paid for his wife, Mary Nawa, claiming he had been sold a product that did not match the description on the label.
The courtroom, usually a place of serious legal arguments, turned into a theatre of laughter as Fredrick narrated his ordeal before a packed gallery.
According to Fredrick, a devoted Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) member who had faithfully preserved himself for marriage, he entered the union believing that his bride was both educated and untouched, as allegedly represented by her family during lobola negotiations.
“The agreement was clear,” Fredrick told the court. “I was informed that the oil reserve was untouched, pure and intact. I paid K65,000 based on that representation.”
The courtroom fell silent as everyone leaned forward to hear what happened next.
“During the honeymoon,” Fredrick continued dramatically, “I discovered that the crude oil field had already been explored. The drilling had taken place long before I arrived. The forbidden fruit had already been harvested.”
At that point, several people in court reportedly struggled to contain their laughter, while one elderly man nearly dropped his walking stick.
When it was Mary’s turn to speak, she calmly admitted that she was not a virgin and had previously been involved with two former boyfriends.
“I never told them to say I was a virgin,” she explained. “Nobody asked me. Our culture expects girls to be virgins, but in my case, I was not.”
Her confession sent murmurs throughout the courtroom.
The magistrate, after listening to both sides, reportedly advised parents and marriage negotiators to be truthful when discussing conditions attached to lobola.
