MacPherson Formally Arrested, Remains Detained

A ZNBC journalist accused of cyber crimes has been formally charged and arrested him under the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025.

MacPherson Mukuka, 37, has been charged with Prohibition of Recording a Private Conversation Without Prior Notice, contrary to Section 10 of the Cyber Crimes Act, after recording a private meeting without informing those involved before publishing the audio on the Earth Television Zambia Facebook page.

Mukuka’s arrest follows his detention last week after police launched investigations into the viral audio recording, which caught public service workers plotting to interfere and manipulate the 2026 presidential, parliamentary and local government elections.

According to Zambia Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, the alleged offence was committed between July 14 and July 17, 2026.

“It is further alleged that the conversation was recorded without giving prior notice to the persons involved and that the recording was later published on the same Facebook page,” Chilabi said.

Police said investigations into the matter have since been concluded, leading to Mukuka’s formal charge and arrest.

Chilabi added that the suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear before court soon.
