Former Vice President Dr. Nevers Mumba has clarified that the benefits of Former Presidents and Former Vice Presidents Act No. 16 of 2026, enacted in June this year, has not yet been triggered.
Dr. Mumba, who recently announced his resignation from partisan politics, said no former Vice President is currently receiving the benefits provided under the law.
Featuring on Prime Television’s Matters Arising programme, he dismissed claims that his resignation was motivated by the desire to access benefits, stressing that former Vice Presidents cannot enjoy such entitlements while engaged in active politics.
He challenged those with doubts to verify the matter with the Secretary to Cabinet’s Office, which he described as a public institution.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mumba commented on the incarceration of Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile, saying their human rights must be respected as every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
He noted that President Hakainde Hichilema is aware of the matter and described delays in taking the two before court as regrettable.
Dr. Mumba added that the Director of Public Prosecutions is working on measures to ensure the cases are brought before the courts.
