JOHANNESBURG PENSIONER CLAIMS SHE LOST MORE THAN R1.2 MILLION AFTER JUST ONE CLICK, AS ALLEGED PHISHING SCAM SERVES AS A WARNING TO ALL SOUTH AFRICANS
A Johannesburg pensioner, Luisa Westphal, says her life changed forever after she allegedly lost more than R1.2 million in a sophisticated phishing scam.
According to her account, the incident began with what appeared to be a legitimate message. After clicking on a link, fraudsters allegedly gained access to her banking information and drained her accounts, wiping out years of savings.
Westphal says the financial loss has had a devastating impact on her life, leaving her emotionally distressed and raising concerns about the growing threat of online banking fraud in South Africa.
Cybersecurity experts continue to warn South Africans never to click on suspicious links sent by SMS, email or messaging apps, even if they appear to come from trusted companies or banks. Criminals often use fake websites and convincing messages to steal personal information and banking details.
The case serves as another reminder that online scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with victims losing thousands or even millions of rand in a matter of minutes.
