FIFA World Cup 2026: “We Dignify What Our Country Is” – Cabo Verde Coach Says After Loss to Argentina

Cabo Verde head coach Bubista has expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, despite their dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

According to FIFA.com, the African side delivered one of the tournament’s most spirited displays, pushing the reigning world champions to extra time after overturning Lionel Messi’s first-half opener.

Their resilience ensured the contest remained level at the end of regulation, before Argentina eventually secured victory through an own goal.

Reflecting on the performance, Bubista said his players had represented their nation with pride and stayed true to their footballing identity throughout the competition.

“We dignify what our country is. We drew twice against the world champions, we took it to extra time,” Bubista said after the game.

“More than anything, it’s being proud of our players, who were dignified in the World Cup. We showed our identity,” the Cabo Verde coach added.

Although the defeat ended Cabo Verde’s World Cup campaign, the team earned widespread praise for matching Argentina over long periods and forcing one of the tournament favourites to work hard for a place in the next round.
