HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF? — THE MWEWA LEGACY RETURNS TO LUSAKA

Nearly 50 years later, the Mwewa name is back at the helm of Lusaka.
In the 1970s, Dr Simon Cushi Mwewa served as Mayor of the then Greater City of Lusaka, leaving office in 1979 before later serving as Lusaka Governor during the administration of Zambia’s first President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda.

Interestingly, it was during his time as Mayor that the original “Keep Lusaka Clean, Green and Healthy” campaign was conceived — an ambitious vision to make the capital cleaner, greener and healthier.

Now, almost half a century later, his son, Chitambala Mwewa , steps into the same office.

And the timing could hardly be more striking.

The new Mayor takes charge as Lusaka once again faces a major cleanliness and order challenge, including plans to move street vendors from undesignated trading spaces into designated markets.
Father planted the seed. Son now inherits the city.

The big question is:
Will Chitambala Mwewa revive the Mwewa legacy — and can Lusaka once again become the clean, orderly capital it was envisioned to be?

History may not just be repeating itself. It may be giving Lusaka another chance.
