UPND discards former MP, Christopher Shakafuswa, instead adopts Adrian Banda for Mandevu by-election
THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has adopted Adrian Banda as its candidate for the forthcoming Mandevu Constituency parliamentary by-election in Lusaka
The Mandevu seat has remained vacant since the August 13, 2026 General Election, after the poll was declared inconclusive.
According to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), unknown individuals attacked the Mandevu Constituency totalling centre on August 18, during aggregation of results. The attackers assaulted staff, destroyed results transmission kits and fled with all election documents. Ballot papers were later found dumped and burnt.
The incident left the Returning Officer unable to complete results management and declare a winner.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro subsequently announced that the Commission had resolved to hold a fresh election in Mandevu.
The Commission has now set Thursday, 5th November 2026 as the polling date for the Mandevu and Lumezi parliamentary by-elections, as well as the Mbala Mayoral election and 11 ward by-elections. Nominations will be held on 8th October, with campaigns running from 10th October to 4th November.
Banda will now fly the UPND flag as the ruling party seeks to win the key Lusaka constituency.
