CANDLE SYMBOL REPLACEMENT
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has mandated that all independent candidates using light symbols, such as “Candle,” must select new symbols by June 10, 2026, to avoid clashes with symbols registered to political parties.
This decision follows a rise in the popularity of the Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu presidential ticket and aims to maintain clarity on ballot papers.
All candidates using these symbols are required to engage with the ECZ and choose alternative symbols from the official Register of Symbols, ensuring they are distinct from those of political parties or other candidates.
If candidates fail to submit an alternative by the deadline, the ECZ will allocate a new symbol according to Regulation 8(6) of the Electoral Process (General) Regulations.
According to the ECZ, this directive is intended to ensure a fair electoral process and prevent voter confusion on polling day.
