Mundubile gives fullest account yet of alleged military raid on Lusaka home
NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has given his fullest account yet of an incident at his Lusaka residence on Friday night, alleging that more than 50 soldiers surrounded the property, rammed through the gate and opened fire.
Lusaka, 17 August – Speaking during a live Facebook broadcast with Emmanuel Mwamba, Mundubile said the incident followed a raid on his party’s office in Zambezi, where several members were allegedly arrested.
He said that shortly after the raid, his bodyguard, Richard Banda, alerted him that the residence had been surrounded.
According to Mundubile, a vehicle was then used to ram the gate before gunfire broke out outside the house.
He said his wife, three daughters, a niece and a nephew were inside the residence at the time, together with Bishop Mwamba, Kafwaya and Patrick Mwansa.
Mundubile said that as armed men in military uniform entered the property, he retreated with Kafwaya to the master bedroom. The two men were later found hiding inside a walk-in wardrobe, he said
He alleged that soldiers opened fire into the room, hitting Kafwaya twice while he was seated. Mundubile said two other bullets struck the wall close to where he was hiding.
He further alleged that three bullets narrowly missed his wife while she was in the same room.
Mundubile disputed accounts suggesting that foreign nationals or sophisticated military weapons had been found at the property.
He said the only weapons present were items intended for civilian protection and insisted that no one had escaped from the scene.
The NRPUP candidate also rejected an account given by Patrick Kangwa the previous night, describing it as inaccurate.
Mundubile challenged members of the public to visit the residence and inspect the scene for themselves, saying the condition of the property would allow his account of events to be independently verified.
His account represents allegations about the events and has not, in itself, established who fired the shots or under what circumstances the shooting occurred.
