ZESCO TO EXPLORE GEOTHERMAL POWER TO MEET INCREASING DEMAND FOR POWER IN THE SADC REGION

Power Utility Zesco Limited has disclosed plans to venture into geothermal power production to meet the increasing demand for electricity in Zambia and the entire southern African region.

Zesco Managing Director Victor Mapani tells Phoenix News that geothermal energy remains underexploited in the country despite its potential to reduce reliance on traditional forms of power generation.

Mr. Mapani explains that geothermal power production which involves tapping into the earth’s natural heat reservoirs to generate electricity will help the power utility to diversify Zambia’s energy sources.

He says geothermal energy is clean and renewable, making it an attractive option for countries seeking to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The Zesco Managing Director adds that harnessing Zambia’s geothermal potential will boost the county’s energy independence while addressing climate change induced challenges which have led to periodic power shortages.
