CHAVUMA, THE HISTORY YOU WERE NEVER TAUGHT!

Chavuma district is the furthest district in North Western Province being about 600 KM away from Solwezi the Provincial Headquarters.

It is a district that shares boarders with Angola on its western and southern side while it neighbors Zambezi on its eastern side.

This district was part of the then Balovale district (current day Zambezi district) till later when the country was on its way to independence when it was decided that a new district be created for purposes of easing the administrative works.

How did the name Chavuma come about?, chavuma is a name that is derived from the sound of the water waves of the Zambezi River, which passes through the district from Angola to Zambezi district.

Because of its rocky nature in the area, the River produces quite a buzzing sound and as early settlers started arriving, they were amazed at how much noise the river was making hence started calling the area ‘Ngalila yakuvuma’ to mean an area that makes noise in Luvale.

Over the years, people started calling it Chavuma (the buzzing sound) hence the name was adopted as official for the district.

The Zambezi River in Chavuma is so rocky that it produces meandering water waves that stands as Chavuma waterfalls.

It is a beautiful place to be, be sure to visit it one day.
