Zimbabwe’s government has taken a different position from several other African countries regarding recent events in South Africa.
While countries such as Ghana and some ECOWAS member states have expressed concern over what they describe as xenophobic attacks and have called for the matter to be discussed at the African Union, Zimbabwe has said it has not found evidence of widespread xenophobic violence targeting its citizens.
Harare has instead encouraged continued cooperation with the South African government and has maintained that diplomatic engagement is the best way to protect Zimbabweans living and working in South Africa.
The differing responses have sparked debate across the continent, with some people supporting Zimbabwe’s cautious diplomatic approach, while others believe African governments should speak out more strongly whenever foreign nationals are affected by violence or intimidation.
South Africa’s government has repeatedly stated that criminal acts should not be confused with government policy and has condemned violence while also saying immigration laws must be enforced through legal processes.
