NRPUP President Brian Mundubile says he will not accept the election results if he loses because, in his view, it would mean the process was not free and fair.
Addressing members of the press today, Mr. Mundubile said an election is not an event but a process that must be judged from start to finish.
He said the conduct of the ECZ so far suggests that the process has not been free and fair because it suspended his campaigns while allowing campaigns to continue in areas where there has been violence.
Mr. Mundubile said that, as a presidential candidate, he has not been able to travel outside the country to mobilize resources because his travel documents and mobile phones are being held by the state.
“An election is not an event but a process. A process is judged from the start to the finishing point. So far, the process has not been free and fair,” he said.
“One thing is clear: if we are declared losers of this election, we won’t accept the results because they won’t be a true reflection of a free and fair election. How can you say the election is free and fair when I, as a presidential candidate, am not allowed to leave the country to mobilize resources? My passports and mobile phones have been kept by the state, preventing me from moving around to look for resources. So, to answer your question, my hands and legs are tied, yet you want to say this is a fair fight,” he stated.
He warned the ECZ against manipulating the election results, especially in perceived UPND strongholds.
“International election observers must pay attention to perceived UPND strongholds because the results might be manipulated from there,” he said.
