NRPUP presidential running mate Makebi Zulu sparked debate on Friday after urging supporters at a campaign rally in Zingalume compound to take out their phones and publicly declare on Facebook that President Hakainde Hichilema “is a liar.”
In a dramatic moment, Makebi repeatedly challenged the crowd to make the post, questioning whether they were too afraid of the country’s Cyber Security laws to express their political opinions online.
When the crowd appeared hesitant, Makebi doubled down and made the statement himself.
“Do you have phones? Write on your phones and post on Facebook that Hakainde is a liar. Post that Hakainde is a liar. Are you scared? Are you afraid of Cyber laws? I am saying it here; Hakainde is a liar,” he declared.
He claimed the President had failed to deliver on several promises made during the 2021 election campaign, pointing to the cost of mealie meal, fertilizer and fuel as examples.
“Didn’t he lie about mealie meal? Didn’t he lie about fertilizer? Didn’t he lie about fuel prices? Isn’t it the person who lied is that same person?” he asked.
Makebi also highlighted mealie meal prepacks being held by supporters, using them to question whether the government’s economic policies had improved the lives of ordinary Zambians.
“Wasn’t he the one that was going round with these prepacks? He told you you would be having three meals a day. How many meals are you having now? How many of those meals come from a prepack? This can only prepare porridge. Is this the life we want to continue with?”
He concluded by urging voters to back the NRPUP presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile, saying the alliance was offering Zambians an alternative ahead of the August 13 General Election.
The NRPUP presidential team wrapped up its campaign engagements in Lusaka Friday as political parties intensify their final push to win over voters.
