POLICE CLARIFY RELEASE OF SUSPECTS LINKED TO MALICIOUS DAMAGE AT MUDUBILE’S LODGE

The Zambia Police Service in Northern Province has clarified that suspects arrested in connection with the assault and malicious damage to property at a Lodge in Mporokoso belonging to National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity-NRPUP- Presidential Candidate Brian Mudubile were not set free, but were released on police bond in accordance with the law.

Deputy Commanding Officer Charles Mbita says the suspects were formally charged and later released on police bond because the offences are bondable and they provided suitable sureties.

Mr. Mbita says claims that the suspects had been freed were misleading, stressing that their release does not mean the case has been abandoned.

He says investigations and the prosecution of those involved in politically motivated offences would continue without fear or favour.

Mr. Mbita further condemned the continued acts of political violence and the targeting of relatives and associates of political candidates, saying such actions undermine Zambia’s democratic principles.

He has emphasised that the Zambia Police Service would not tolerate politically motivated criminal activities and would enforce the law impartially, regardless of whether the perpetrators belong to the ruling party or the opposition.

Meanwhile, police have launched investigations into a case of malicious damage to property reported at Mporokoso Police Station on June 27 by 50-year-old Mfula Chomba of Chandamali village.

Mr. Chomba, who is also an in-law to Mr. Mudubile, reported that unknown people damaged his property, valued at about K7,000, during the early hours of yesterday.
