According to “people familiar with the matter” who spoke to CNN, Harp precipitated the ban by showing Trump a slew of negative media coverage of him from the now-proscribed outlets. A graphic from Politico reportedly “infuriated” him and television footage of anchors tearing into the administration’s failures sent him over the edge.
Harp, who serves as Trump’s “special assistant and executive assistant” is one of the most bizarre fixtures of the current administration. It’s unclear if her extreme proximity to the President is simply a result of her slavish loyalty or if there’s something more at play. In any case, she is wholly unqualified to be exerting this level of influence on the President of the United States.
We are now living in a country where the man with control over our nuclear arsenal, a man in an obvious state of cognitive decline, is being manipulated by a mentally unstable sycophant to attack the Constitution. It’s unsustainable.
Of course, even if Harp was responsible for tilting Trump into this unprecedented attack on the First Amendment, the buck ultimately stops with him. This is a man who only believes in free speech when that speech is lavishing him with praise. He’s a textbook authoritarian whose desire to become a full-blown dictator has been stymied only by the Constitution and his own incompetence. It now appears that Harp is encouraging those dystopian fantasies. She must be held accountable.
