M’MEMBE MEETS WITH THE COMMONWEALTH DELEGATION

Dr Fred M’membe, President of the Socialist Party of Zambia, met with a Commonwealth delegation to discuss serious concerns about the country’s electoral environment ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

He highlighted the shrinking democratic space over the last five years, marked by systemic obstacles faced by opposition parties in fulfilling their mandates and the denial of 34 applications for political rallies by his party.

M’membe criticized recent constitutional amendments aimed at consolidating the ruling party’s power and mentioned intimidation and obstruction faced by opposition candidates, particularly in UPND strongholds.

He noted an erosion of freedom of expression, with increasing legal actions against opposition leaders, including himself, related to criticisms of the government.

Despite these challenges, M’membe expressed his commitment to reforming Zambia’s electoral system.

He questioned the efficacy of Commonwealth observation missions, citing unimplemented recommendations from the 2021 elections and the UPND government’s failure to repeal restrictive laws.

He also pointed out the Electoral Commission’s dependence on government institutions, which compromises its independence.

M’membe advocated for an independent conflict resolution body to address electoral disputes.

Vice-Presidential Candidate Dolika Banda emphasized the need for inclusive electoral participation, urging the Commonwealth to ensure fairness and respect for fundamental freedoms.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful, transparent electoral process that embodies the Zambian people’s will.
