Mines Minister Sues Matero MP for Defamation Over Facebook Post
The Lusaka High Court has allowed Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe to sue Matero Member of Parliament (MP) Miles Sampa for defamation. This follows a Facebook post made by Sampa on December 20, 2024, where he accused Kabuswe of becoming a multimillionaire after the sale of Mopani Copper Mines.
Kabuswe is seeking K50 million in damages and a public apology, saying the post damaged his reputation. In court documents, he argued that the statements were false and harmful, and he asked the court to stop Sampa from making further similar comments.
The court granted Kabuswe permission to file the lawsuit during the Christmas break. Justice Charles Kafunda said Kabuswe could proceed with the case and that the costs of the application would be decided later.
Kabuswe’s lawyers said the minister wants to protect his name and hold Sampa accountable for spreading false information.
Miles Sampa has not yet responded to the lawsuit, but the case is expected to draw attention because it could influence how public figures in Zambia handle disputes over social media posts.
The legal battle will now move to court, where Kabuswe will argue for damages and seek to clear his name.
