LUMEZI, Eastern Province — The Lumezi Constituency has officially fallen vacant following the conviction and sentencing of area Member of Parliament, Munir Zulu, to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for libel.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, formally notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) through a letter dated April 8th, 2025, triggering the start of the by-election process.

ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro, has confirmed receiving the Speaker’s correspondence and stated that the Commission is now activating its internal procedures in line with electoral regulations.

“Stakeholders will be informed of the next steps in due course,” Mr. Kasaro told ZNBC News, adding that updates will be shared once the Commission concludes its consultations.

Zulu’s departure sets the stage for a political showdown in Lumezi, with parties expected to begin jostling for the soon-to-be announced by-election.
