KABIMBA SAYS TREASON ACCUSED DESERVE FAIR TRIAL

Economic Front leader Wynter Kabimba has noted the need to subject incarcerated Tonse Alliance leaders accused of treason to a fast and fair trial, as is required in a democratic country.

Kabimba said that it is also premature for the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Assembly and Association, Gina Romero, to call for the release of all the arrested people charged with treason.

He explained that the accused are being represented by their lawyers and if there are any issues of human rights abuse, they will be raised through the courts.

Kabimba added that if the accused people are innocent, they will be discharged by the courts.

He explained that it is also unfair to call the arrest political just because it coincides with a political event.

Romero recently urged Zambian authorities to release all political detainees and restore democratic accountability.

She cited alleged widespread arrests of opposition supporters and what she described as “concocted charges of treason” against senior opposition alliance members following the post-election period.
