If Hichilema Stands in 2031, He Will Be Life President – Silumbe
Leadership Movement (LM) Party President Dr. Richard Silumbe says President Hakainde Hichilema is the most experienced and well-informed President Zambia has had.
Speaking on Monday, Dr. Silumbe said no candidate can defeat President Hichilema if he contests the 2031 general election, arguing that only the constitutional two-term limit can prevent him from continuing as Head of State.
“If HH stands in 2031, forget about change of government. He will be life President. He is the most experienced and well-informed President. Only a term limit can stop him,” Dr. Silumbe stated.
His remarks come a few weeks after President Hichilema was sworn in for a second five-year term on September 1, 2026, following his victory in the August 13 election.
Under Article 106(3) of the Constitution of Zambia, a person who has twice held office as President is not eligible for election as President. This means President Hichilema’s current 2026-2031 term is his second and final term under the existing constitutional framework.
The Constitution can only be amended to allow a third term through a parliamentary process. As of today, no formal bill to amend the presidential term limit has been presented to Parliament
