CCZ OPPOSES CALLS TO REMOVE PRESIDENTIAL TERM LIMITS
The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) has opposed calls to remove presidential term limits, saying any changes to the Constitution should be made in the interest of all Zambians and not individuals or political parties.
CCZ Secretary General Father James Phiri says the Constitution must be respected and that any proposed amendments should undergo broad consultation.
His comments come amid debate on social media over proposals concerning presidential term limits, which have attracted differing views from various stakeholders.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Father Phiri said constitutional amendments should serve the interests of the nation rather than the political interests of any particular group.
“Looking at what is obtaining now, some individuals want to push the idea of extending the presidential term limit to suit a political party’s wishes, which is not good for the country,” he said.
Father Phiri said the Constitution provides the fundamental framework for governing Zambia and should therefore be safeguarded.
He added that any decision to amend it must reflect the interests of Zambians and follow the required legal and consultative processes.
