SOUTH AFRICA BACKS PATRICE MOTSEPE TO BECOME THE FIRST AFRICAN PRESIDENT OF FIFA, A MOVE THAT COULD MAKE HISTORY FOR THE CONTINENT

South Africa has officially backed CAF President Patrice Motsepe to eventually become the first African to lead FIFA, the organisation that governs world football.

The endorsement comes as current FIFA President Gianni Infantino is widely expected to remain in office until 2031, meaning any potential bid by Motsepe would likely come after that.

If elected, Motsepe would make history as the first African to serve as FIFA President, marking a major milestone for African football on the global stage.

Motsepe, who is also one of Africa’s wealthiest businessmen, has led the Confederation of African Football (CAF) since 2021 and has been credited with introducing financial reforms, expanding competitions and strengthening the organisation’s commercial growth.

Despite South Africa’s endorsement, Motsepe has not publicly announced any intention to run for the FIFA presidency. However, the backing has already sparked excitement among many football fans, who believe Africa deserves greater representation at the highest level of world football.

Supporters say an African FIFA President could bring fresh perspectives and accelerate the development of football across the continent, while others believe any future election should focus on the best candidate regardless of nationality.
