AUKUS Partners To Develop Undersea Drones For Cable Protection And Military Operations

The United States, United Kingdom, and Australia are expanding defense cooperation under the AUKUS security partnership with plans to develop advanced unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs) designed to protect critical underwater infrastructure and strengthen military capabilities.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the three nations are working together on next-generation underwater drone technology as part of broader efforts to enhance maritime security and undersea warfare capabilities.

The systems are expected to play a key role in monitoring and protecting vital submarine communication cables, energy infrastructure, and strategic maritime routes, while also supporting intelligence, surveillance, and defense operations.

The announcement highlights the growing importance of the undersea domain as global powers increasingly focus on protecting critical infrastructure from sabotage, espionage, and emerging security threats.

The AUKUS partnership continues to be a central pillar of Western defense strategy in the Indo-Pacific, with members investing heavily in advanced technologies ranging from nuclear-powered submarines to artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.

An abnormal situation continues to reshape the strategic competition beneath the world’s oceans.
