MUNDUBILE DEMANDS CLARITY ON BALLOT MARKING, FASTER RESULTS
National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has challenged the Electoral Commission of Zambia to immediately clarify its guidance on ballot marking, arguing that last-minute changes could confuse voters and undermine confidence in the electoral process.
Mr Mundubile says the Commission should maintain a clear and consistent message that voters should use the X mark when casting their ballots, citing Regulation 33 of the Electoral General Regulations.
He has also called on ECZ to expedite the announcement of presidential election results, arguing that modern communication and digital transmission systems should enable the Commission to complete the process within 24 hours of the close of polling not the 17th of August as announced.
The candidate has also condemned what he describes as the arrest and detention of political actors, media personnel and content creators in the run-up to the election, calling on the Zambia Police Service to remain professional and impartial
He has further called on his supporters to remain peaceful, avoid provocation and violence, and exercise their right to vote peacefully on election day.
Mr Mundubile has urged voters to mark their ballots clearly with an X in the box of their preferred candidate, while respecting electoral officials, monitors and observers.
He says the election belongs neither to the government nor the opposition, but to the people of Zambia, stressing that political parties and governments may change, but the Republic remains.
On Thursday ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro disclosed that other marks such as a tick could be used on voting day aside from the X which has been used for the longest period.
