LAURA MITI – HICHILEMA STILL THE BEST CHOICE FOR ZAMBIA
By Wiseman Henry Zulu
Appearing on the Costa programme on Diamond TV, governance activist Laura Miti made a striking observation ahead of Zambia’s August 13, 2026 general elections.
She stated: “there is currently no opposition leader or presidential candidate who presents a stronger alternative to President Hichilema.”
Her remarks shift the debate from politics to performance, leadership and national direction.
Ms. Miti also highlighted the need for accountable leadership, strong institutions and respect for constitutional governance—standards many Zambians associate with President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government.
Since 2021, President Hichilema and the UPND government have focused on economic recovery, service delivery and institutional reforms, with measurable results across key sectors.
Free education has brought over 2.0 million learners** into the classroom, supported by the recruitment of over 41,917 teachers and over 11,200 health workers, significantly strengthening public service delivery.
Economically, Zambia secured a US$3.0 billion debt restructuring agreement, while inflation declined from 22.7% in August 2021 to 6.6% in May 2026, reflecting improved macroeconomic stability and growing investor confidence.
In mining, copper production has recovered to about 800,000 metric tonnes annually, while agriculture recorded an actual maize harvest of 5 million metric tonnes for the 2025/2026 farming season, marking one of the strongest agricultural outputs in the country’s recent history.
Social protection programmes now support 1.3 million households, while pension reforms under NAPSA have enabled workers to access part of their savings through the landmark 20% partial withdrawal initiative.
Even during the devastating drought that affected millions of citizens, government relief and agricultural support programmes helped cushion vulnerable households and protect livelihoods.
Ms. Miti further stressed that leadership must ensure that “working abroad is a choice, not a necessity.” This aligns with ongoing efforts to create jobs, expand opportunities and diversify the economy.
Her conclusion is clear:
Judging President Hakainde Hichilema on governance, economic stability and delivery, he remains without a stronger alternative on the current political landscape.
As the election day approaches, the choice before voters is increasingly one of continuity and proven results not empty promises and baseless leadership.
For Zambians, the message remains unchanged:
Bally Loves, Bally Cares and Bally Delivers.
