Independent Zambezi Central Member of Parliament-elect Raphael Ngimbu and Nkana MP-elect Alexander Chiteme have separately asked the Lusaka High Court to dismiss petitions challenging their elections, arguing that the allegations of electoral malpractice, violence and irregularities are unsupported by evidence.
In his response to a petition filed by United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Dennis Mano, Mr Ngimbu denied allegations that his election in Zambezi Central Constituency was marred by electoral malpractice and maintained that he was lawfully elected and declared the winner.
Mr Ngimbu described the allegations contained in the petition as a misrepresentation of facts and, in turn, accused Mr Mano of engaging in corrupt practices and electoral malpractice during the campaign period, on polling day and afterwards.
He specifically denied allegations that he campaigned on polling day, saying that he was at home on bed rest at the time.
Mr Ngimbu said that if any of his agents engaged in campaigning on polling day, such conduct was undertaken without his knowledge, consent, authorisation or approval.
