🇿🇲 BRIEFING | Zambia Repatriates 40 Citizens Amid Anti-Foreigner Tensions in South Africa
The Zambian government has successfully repatriated 40 citizens from South Africa following growing concerns over anti-foreigner sentiment and calls for foreign nationals to leave parts of KwaZulu-Natal Province.
According to the Zambia Association in South Africa (ZASA), the repatriation exercise was coordinated by the Zambian Embassy in Pretoria and took place between May 23 and May 25, with all returnees arriving safely in Zambia.
The operation was triggered by developments in Estcourt, a town in KwaZulu-Natal, where local community groups and the town’s mayor reportedly called on foreign nationals to leave by the end of May. The announcements raised alarm among members of the Zambian community, prompting engagement between ZASA and the Zambian Embassy.
In response, the Embassy established a registration process for citizens wishing to return home. The programme eventually expanded beyond Estcourt to include Zambians living in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and surrounding areas.
ZASA President Ferdinand Simaanya said the organisation continues to monitor the situation and work closely with Zambian diplomatic officials as uncertainty persists in some communities.
“While the situation remains relatively calm in some areas, reports indicate that uncertainty persists in certain localities,” the association said.
The organisation is now compiling a database of Zambians who may require documentation assistance or wish to return voluntarily. Efforts are also underway to engage families in Zambia whose relatives may be affected by developments in South Africa.
The latest repatriation highlights the recurring vulnerability of migrant communities during periods of social and economic tension in South Africa, where outbreaks of anti-foreigner sentiment have periodically affected foreign nationals from across the region.
For now, Zambian authorities are urging citizens in South Africa to remain vigilant, comply with local laws, maintain contact with community leaders, and seek assistance from the Embassy whenever necessary.
