ZESCO BOARD FIRES VICTOR MAPANI BUT MINISTER OF ENERGY TRYING TO OVERTURN DECISION

The ZESCO Board met on Thursday, 23rd May 2024 and resolved to fire the Managing Director.
The Board resolved to fire him for failure to run the institution, for gross acts of corruption and incompetence.
However Minister of Energy summoned Mapani to understand the crisis.
Mapani has threatened to have the Board dissolved and asked Kapala to stay away.
He is reported to have said that President Hichilema was handling the possible dissolution of the Board to protect him.
Kapala also disputed allegations that he was paid to delay the dismissal of Mapani.
Kapala has began to meet individual members of the Board to persuade them to reverse the unanimous dismissal briefed he contacted the Board members individually in unprecedented circumstances and requested the Board Chair to reverse the decision of the Board.
Kapala was asking the individual Board Members the following questions;
1.Why do you want to remove Managing Director?
2 Why didn’t you send him a second warning letter?
3 Did you subject your decision to a vote to reach your resolution?
4 Why didn’t you talk to him and warn him verbally?
But the Board members separately told the Minister that the unanimous decision was made against Mapani to save ZESCO and the Country. He said this decision was instrumental to save government and the public from further harm because of bad decision being taken at ZESCO.
