ZCLU HONOURS ARCHBISHOP MPUNDU’S LEGACY OF JUSTICE

The Zambian Civil Liberties Union (ZCLU) says the passing of Archbishop Emeritus Telespore George Mpundu marks the loss of a fearless defender of human dignity.

ZCLU Acting Executive Director Derrick Chekwe declared that Archbishop Mpundu stood with refugees when it was unpopular to do so.

He observed that the Archbishop consistently reminded the nation that justice must never be selective.

Chekwe emphasised that Archbishop Mpundu’s ministry was rooted in compassion and moral clarity.

The Union notes that his advocacy contributed to the Refugees Act of 2017, which created a legal pathway to citizenship.

Chekwe highlighted that the Archbishop lamented the continued exclusion of refugee children born in Zambia.

He recalled that Archbishop Mpundu urged the Church to defend the displaced as a matter of faith and conscience.

Chekwe underlined that the Archbishop’s public support for ZCLU became part of the Constitutional Court record in 2025.

He affirmed that Archbishop Mpundu’s voice continues to inspire renewed hope for refugee families.

Chekwe stressed that Zambia must now honour his legacy by building a society where compassion is not political and humanity is not negotiable.
