The United Party for National Development (UPND) has been making frantic efforts to frustrate the planned campaign activities of National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile in Western Province.
According to sources within the UPND party, senior UPND officials allegedly held a strategic meeting yesterday where concerns were raised over Mr. Mundubile’s growing political influence and campaign momentum across the country. The sources allege that party officials fear his continued campaigns in Western Province could erode the UPND’s support in what has traditionally been regarded as one of its strongest regions.
The same sources further revealed that funds have been mobilized to sponsor UPND caders to pose as Barotse activists who will claim to be members of the Barotseland Nationalist Youth Alliance to publicly oppose Mr. Mundubile’s planned visit. According to the information obtained, the group is expected to issue a statement rejecting his campaign in Western Province, claiming that Mr. Mundubile and the Tonse Alliance do not have the interests of the people of Western Province at heart.
The sources also claim that the owner of Blue Gum Ground, where Mr. Mundubile was reportedly expected to hold a political rally, has allegedly come under pressure and threats aimed at preventing the venue from hosting the event.
Some civil society organisations have questioned why a presidential candidate seeking public office should allegedly face obstacles in accessing parts of the country to campaign, arguing that such claims, if substantiated, would undermine the principles of political tolerance and democratic competition.
Meanwhile the real members of Barotseland Nationalists Youth Alliance are well known persons in Barotseland and the people will be waiting to see who are those members have been given money to betrayal the people.
