SPORTS MINISTER GAYTON McKENZIE BREAKS HIS SILENCE ON THE R31 MILLION FIFA WORLD CUP SPENDING STORM, DECLARES HE SHOULD BE FIRED AND JAILED IF HE USED THE MONEY FOR HIMSELF AND VOWS TO RELEASE EVERY RECEIPT TO SOUTH AFRICANS

Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has responded forcefully to growing criticism over the reported R31 million spent on South Africa’s delegation to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The controversy intensified after questions were raised about the costs of the trip, with critics demanding a full explanation of how taxpayers’ money was used.

In response, McKenzie rejected allegations that he personally benefited from the expenditure. In a public statement, he said that if he used the R31 million for himself, he should be fired and jailed. He also pledged to release all receipts and provide a full breakdown of the spending, saying South Africans deserve complete transparency.

The minister argued that the accusations against him are politically motivated and insisted that every cent spent on the trip will be publicly accounted for.

The debate has since sparked widespread reactions online, with some people calling for an independent investigation, while others say the minister should first be given the opportunity to publish the promised financial records before any conclusions are drawn.

Do you believe releasing all the receipts will settle the debate, or should there still be an independent investigation into the R31 million expenditure?
