SOUR MILK CAUSING DENTAL ISSUES IN SHANG’OMBO

Dental caries is the most prevalent dental ailment in Shang’ombo, Western Province.

According to information obtained during the outreach programme being conducted by Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS), most complaints related to dental health are associated with dental caries.

Dental caries is mostly associated with lack of oral health hygiene, which is largely attributed to social life-style.

This came to light at Keyana Rural Health Centre and Mulonga Mini Hospital during the ongoing ZFDS outreach programme in the rural district.

ZFDS team leader Chiteta Lumayi said majority of the people who sought dental services had caries.

“What we established is that the reason why most of them were coming with caries is that they consume a lot of sour milk,” he said.

“Remember that sour milk is acidic in nature and that, coupled with poor oral hygiene, leads to caries.”
