Sakala, 29, who was ‘slaughtered’ like cattle in Magoye, was last born in family of seven
THE family of brutally murdered Stephen Sakala, 29, says their son was a peaceful and humble young man who did not deserve the horrific manner in which his life was taken.
Sakala was killed in the early hours of yesterday after unknown assailants allegedly slit his throat while he slept at the residence of Independent parliamentary candidate Confucious Mweene in Magoye East Constituency, Southern Province.
The deceased, a resident of Lusaka’s Makeni area, had travelled to Magoye at the invitation of Mweene to assist with activities linked to the candidate’s campaign.
According to Mweene, the attackers may have intended to target him, but instead ended the life of a young man whose family says had never harmed anyone.
What may appear to some as another statistic in the growing concern over political violence is, to the Sakala family, the devastating loss of a beloved son, brother and friend whose future has been abruptly cut short.
Family members describe Sakala as a respectful and peace-loving youth who stayed away from trouble and was committed to building a better life for himself and those around him.
The 29-year-old was the youngest of seven children, a position that made him especially cherished within the family.
Relatives say his death has left a void that words cannot adequately describe.
As they struggle to come to terms with the tragedy, family members are haunted by the circumstances surrounding his death, saying no human being deserves to be killed in such a cruel and traumatic manner.
Now, the family hopes those responsible for Sakala’s death will be identified and brought before the law.
For the Sakalas, the pain is not only in losing a son, but in the manner in which he was taken from them — a tragedy that has shattered a family and left lasting scars on all who knew and loved him.
