Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Director General Brian Banda has died after a short illness.
Banda died at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre on Saturday, 8 August 2026.
He had led Malawi’s public broadcaster since assuming office on 16 March 2026. Before joining MBC, Banda held several influential positions in broadcasting and government communications, including serving as press secretary to former president Lazarus Chakwera.
In 2020, the Media Institute of Southern Africa condemned an attack on Banda by alleged Democratic Progressive Party supporters while he was covering political events in Blantyre.
Tributes are pouring in following the death of one of Malawi’s most prominent media figures. Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and MBC.
