President Hichilema accepts resignation of Court of Appeal judge Catherine Makungu
President Hakainde Hichilema has accepted the resignation of Court of Appeal Judge Catherine Kunda Makungu, who formally stepped down from her position on 1 October 2026.
Lusaka, 5 October – State House confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday by Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka, saying Justice Makungu had submitted her resignation in writing to the President in accordance with Article 142(5) of the Constitution of Zambia.
The constitutional provision allows a judge to resign from office by submitting written notice to the President.
President Hichilema has thanked Justice Makungu for her service to the Judiciary and the nation, acknowledging her contribution during her tenure on the Court of Appeal bench.
The Head of State has also wished the outgoing judge well in her future endeavours.
The announcement confirms Justice Makungu’s departure from one of Zambia’s superior courts, although State House did not disclose the reasons behind her decision to resign.
The statement also did not indicate whether arrangements had been made to appoint a replacement.
