The Patriotic Front (PF) has unearthed a scam in which the ruling UPND is allegedly planning to register or transfer voters ahead of next week’s Mayembe ward by election in Shiwang’andu District.
PF Shiwang’andu Constituency Chairman James Mulenga has told journalists in Shiwang’andu that the PF has received disturbing information indicating that the UPND is planning to alter the voter register ahead of next week’s Mayembe ward by election.
Mr Mulenga says the PF will not sit idle and watch the UPND engage in election malpractice saying the will of the people must prevail.
He says information received indicate that the UPND are taking their people to Mpika and Chinsali to transfer them in the voter register and enable them take part in the by election.
“We received a very disturbing information that the UPND, out of desperation, are planning to register new voters as well as transfer voters ahead of next week’s Mayembe ward by election. They have targeted wards such as Mansha, Mukumbi and Lukalashi where they want to transfer the registered voters in these wards into Mayembe ward. Meaning they want to change the voter register and include their members with the view of winning the by election,” he said.
“We are very alert. And we will not allow them to manipulate the election. Let the will of the people prevail.”
He also informed journalists that the party engaged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to find out about these reports and they were informed that such things cannot happen when there is a by election.
“The Officials from ECZ this morning informed us that when there is a by election, registration of new voters or transfer registered voters should not take place when there is an election until when the elections are conducted. But we remain vigilant and we have informed our people to open their eyes during this period,” he said.
He emphasized that election monitors have been adequately informed to ensure that anyone who is not in the current voter register will not be allowed to vote.
