Only compliant Judges must hear eligibility case
Following the suspension of 3 constitutional judges, there are heightened and coordinated activities happening between State House and the Judiciary to ensure that only those judges appointed by President Hakainde Hichilema should hear the eligibility case involving former President Edgar Lungu.
In 2023, President Hakainde Hichilema appointed Professor Margaret Munalula as Judge President of the Constitutional Court and his longtime friend and lawyer, Arnold Shilimi as Deputy President of the court.
Hichilema also appointed Mudford Mwandenga, Judge Maria Kawimbe (his cousin) and Judge Kenneth Mulife as judges of the Constitutional Court.
On Monday 23rd September, President Hichilema suspended judges that ruled against his election petition in 2016. The victims are Justice Palan Mulonda, Justice Ann Sitali and Justice Mulenga Mugeni.
The elibility case comes up on Thursday, 26th September, 2024.
