ONE-YEAR-OLD CHILD DIES AFTER ALLEGED TONGUE-TIE CUTTING

The Zambia Police Service has launched investigations into the death of a one-year-old child following an alleged tongue-tie cutting procedure in Chilanga District.
The child, identified as Clifford Muleya, reportedly died on Thursday after his mother, Loveness Ngandu, took him to the house of 98-year-old Enn Pitrosi in Chipapa after suspecting that he had a tongue-tie condition locally known as akalimba.
Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi says the suspected tongue-tie was allegedly cut using a finger, resulting in an injury inside the child’s mouth and subsequent bleeding, adding that the child later became weak and was rushed to Kazionele Clinic, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Mr. Chilabi says the child’s body is currently at the University Teaching Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
