NOEL NKHOMA SUPPORTS REMOVAL OF INCOMPETENT ZESCO BOARD AND MD

….I have always argued that if an asset is not performing, not delivering public dividends, then it automatically becomes a state liability, which we can’t afford to sustain at great cost…

Yebo Obaba na Manina Ya Nkosi, mwauka! Happy Sunday. Someone shared the attached editorial, which raises important questions, deserving answers;
1. If we can have 8 hours load-shedding in March, what should we expect in September, October?
2. Where was the ZESCO planning unit in all this mess we find ourselves in?.
The editorial concludes by stating that this is the worst Board and Management in the history of ZESCO. I can’t agree more.

I have always argued that if an asset is not performing, not delivering public dividends, then it automatically becomes a state liability, which we can’t afford to sustain at great cost.
Firstly, is to acknowledge that we have a problem of managerial capacity at ZESCO. Solution in the short to medium term is to avoid a crisis altogether by importing expensive power and subsidising to serve the economic collapse or retardation.

People are uncomfortable talking about subsidies, but this is unavoidable in a crisis as we find ourselves in now.

The second question will be, where will the money come from? Cut-back on social spending such as just one example; CDF as l consider power availability as an emergency.

Re-engage with World Bank /IMF for a concessional emergency funding for power imports.

The Mast editorial has called for the disimissal of the most incompetent board ever and its Managing Director, Victor Mapani for engaging in wanton exports while plunging the country in eight-hour load-shedding.

Such drastic measures are expected in October, November and not March!
