Namibia advised to construct a border wall to stop illegal crossing from Angola, Malawi and Zambia

Political analyst Sakaria Shikomba says Namibia should consider constructing a border wall along parts of the Angola and Zambia borders amid rising concern over undocumented migration and strain on public services

Shikomba further claims authorities are receiving reports of large numbers of illegal crossings weekly, raising fears about organised smuggling networks and possible child trafficking. He warns that vulnerable children should not end up on Namibian streets, stressing that exploitation, forced labour and trafficking must be prevented.

He argues Namibia has a sovereign duty to regulate entry, protect infrastructure and maintain social stability, while urging stronger cooperation with neighbouring governments…particularly Angola…to address cross-border movement and criminal networks. He also noted there is currently no active war in Angola that would justify uncontrolled displacement.

Responding to arguments that Angola previously assisted Namibians during exile, Shikomba said Namibians who were in Angola were there legally, under restriction and documentation, and were allocated designated camp areas. He added that historical support should not be used to justify unlawful crossings today, stating relations between states must be based on law and mutual respect.

Shikomba also pointed out that Angola’s economy is roughly ten times larger than Namibia’s. He warned against the illusion among some Angolans that Namibia is like America, where wealth is instantly attainable…a misconception that fuels illegal migration.

He emphasized the issue is not hostility toward neighbouring nations, but enforcement of the law. Foreign nationals remain welcome to enter Namibia legally and through proper immigration procedures.
